EU Council Convenes to Address Middle East Crisis Impact

Charles Michel, the President of the European Council, has urgently summoned its members for a special meeting to discuss the intensifying crisis in the Middle East. The meeting comes in the wake of a recent attack by Hamas on Israel and aims to evaluate the situation’s possible repercussions on the security of the European Union.

In a letter made public on the council’s official website this past Saturday, Michel emphasized that the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians could potentially heighten communal tensions and fuel extremist sentiments within Europe itself.

Michel also expressed significant concern that the ongoing hostilities might lead to a large-scale migration towards neighboring countries. He warned that if not managed prudently, this could result in migration waves ultimately reaching Europe. As a preemptive measure, he invited the European Council members to participate in a virtual meeting scheduled for October 17.

While Michel unequivocally denounced Hamas for their “severe acts of terrorism” against Israel in the previous week and urged for the immediate release of all hostages, he also recognized the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. He noted that the international community is increasingly concerned about the tragic outcomes stemming from the heavy airstrikes and blockade in Gaza.

Michel reiterated Israel’s right to self-defense, asserting that it must adhere to international and humanitarian law. He highlighted the crucial role that the European Union can play in fostering peace in the Middle Eastern region. He emphasized the continual need for renewed commitments to a sustainable peace, advocating a two-state solution through revitalized efforts in the Middle East Peace Process.

Following an unprecedented assault by Hamas that resulted in the loss of more than 1,400 lives, both civilian and military, Israel has officially declared war against the extremist group and initiated a rigorous bombing operation targeting Gaza.

The United Nations Human Rights Commission reports that in retaliation, more than 2,329 Palestinians have lost their lives, and hundreds of thousands have been displaced due to an evacuation mandate by Israel. UN human rights experts have issued a dire warning that Palestinians are on the verge of facing “mass ethnic cleansing” and have urged the international community to step in immediately to broker a ceasefire.
